stomach queasy , Grey stood again and lay the blanket over Lita .
Seeing the blanket over her , Grey was reminded of a funeral shroud and a new wave of tears threatened to spill out . He pushed the thought away and turned . Knives stood behind him . “ We need to get the key ,” she said in a throaty whisper .
It took Grey a second to realize she meant the key for the front door , and his stomach lurched again . To get the key , one of them would have to go digging in Old Man ’ s pants pockets . And judging by Knives ’ face , she didn ’ t look like she could handle touching the man she ’ d stabbed multiple times right now .
Resigned , Grey bent over Old Man ’ s massive body . Eyes diverted , he patted the front pockets of his jeans , feeling for keys . He found them in the right pocket , right below a wallet . He gulped but reached into the pocket , pulling out first the wallet and then grabbing the keys .
Standing with a moan , Grey had to lean on Knives for support . Holding onto each other , they walked like a drunk out of Tabitha ’ s room , down the stairs and through the front door into the newly birthed night . They stared around the neighborhood , which looked very pretty and friendly if a little bit past its prime , and then headed off down the street to search for a policeman .
