The Dark Sire Issue 10 (Winter 2021) | Page 26

Once they crossed the bridge , Robert turned down an unpaved road that led to a pristine yachting club . Vessels of fine craftsmanship and quality bobbed on the sea , waiting for their owner ’ s next adventure . Toward the right was a pavilion entertaining the upper class at a luxurious club . Nancy followed her parents down the dock , and her father helped her aboard . Compared to the other vessels , her father owned a modest craft with two pleather seats , a canvas hood in case of poor weather , and a cabin with a small space to prepare meals . While Nancy enjoyed the open space and freedom of the ocean , she detested the engine ’ s diesel fumes and loud mechanical noises . The distractions interrupted her natural peace as she drifted into another story idea .
Mary shakily stepped onto the rocking vessel and turned to Robert . “ Are you two sure you still want to go out on the water today ?”
With his hands at the helm , Robert turned to his wife . “ Honey , it ’ s a gorgeous summer day .” Nancy couldn ’ t help but notice the annoyance in his voice . “ If I feel that anything is wrong , I promise to turn around , okay ?”
Mary nodded and plastered a synthetic “ yes dear ” smile on her painted lips . Nancy turned away to roll her eyes . All it took was one scary dream to turn their perfect suburban world upside down . She smiled and crossed her arms while drifting into thoughts of her favorite science fiction novels . Her parents would make perfect characters to base her next story on .
