THE DARK SIRE: ACCOLADES (Special Edition Issue, March 2021) | Page 83

Lazarius looked up at the brown velvet ceiling from his vantage point on the floor , unsure if he should just lay there and be thrown around like a rag doll , or , if he should get up and see if the worst was over . The question was quickly answered for him .
“ Get up Lazarius . It ’ s unbecoming to lay there on the floor like a dog , you being a guest in my home .”
He stood , assessing the damage ; no major injuries , that was good . Perhaps his master only needed to relieve some of his aggression for Lazarius ’ actions toward Shizuka . Thinking quickly , he did the only thing he thought would save his worthless soul from death : he stood up , walked before his master , got down on his knees and bowed his head .
“ My Lord . I am not worthy to be in your service any longer . I have allowed my anger to get the better of my judgment and in so doing , have cause harm to your beloved . I should not be allowed to continue as your servant , for I am unable to follow your orders . I ask that you make my death quick , for the sake of the exceptional service I have provided you until now .”
Lord Vaistian stood before Lazarius , staring down at him , then smiled .
“ Get up Lazarius , you look ridiculous on your knees . It doesn ’ t suit you .” He walked around his antique French Empire desk and sat in the high-backed leather chair behind it . “ I am sure you understand how angry I am with you . And I ’ m sure you understand why .”
As Lazarius stood up , he said , “ I do my Lord . I let her words and actions get to me , rather than keeping my calm . I promise you I will not let it happen again .”
