as I slipped it on . Through the door viewer , two gentlemen in suits stood waiting , one with notebook in hand . My face dropped .
I opened the door .
The guests in the room diagonally left from mine were already speaking to two men in suits and a maid was helping a woman in a suit enter a room to the right . The two men at my door both wore scowls and their eyes were assuming .
“ Are you Matthias Kade ?” the man with the notebook asked .

“ Yes . And you are ?” I said with an unenthusiastic
“ I ’ m Detective Grace and this is my partner , Detective Sykes . We ’ re investigating a murder that happened in front of the hotel . Can we ask you a few questions ?”
“ Certainly ,” I said , opening the door wide and walking back into my room .
Detective Grace advanced first , holding his notebook down and looking over the room as he did . Detective Sykes took one step over the threshold but remained at the door , his hands held low in front of himself .

“ Yes , you ’ re free to search the room if you ’ d like .”
