Unlike most literary magazines , TDS boasts serializations , chapter excerpts of novels and full-length novellas printed in quarterly installments . TDS serializations are the featured content , the crème de la crème that caps each issue . Unlike previous categories , only works printed within TDS were eligible for a serialization award . Although there were three stellar works nominated , only one could represent TDS .
“ Kyuuketsuki ” by S . M . Cook is a masterful work of gothic fiction that tells the story of Shizuka , a female Japanese vampire and a Senshin Warrior who fights to save the human race . According to the judges , “ Kyuuketsuki ” leaves the reader wanting more while also picking up again in flawless succession . In essence , it takes you to the edge , holds you there in suspense , and then carries you safely to the continuation of the journey .
The fluidity of this work , its use of multiple points-of-view , and its old-world style of writing is what makes this story representative of TDS . Much like the fiction works of Lombardi and Kiste , Cook takes her place as the shining example of what makes a great TDS serialization .
