THE DARK SIRE: ACCOLADES (Special Edition Issue, March 2021) | Page 29

POETRY
Poetry is sometimes discounted against fiction , as if the lyricism of a poem could not stand up to the full force of a whole story , especially a 5,000 or 80,000 word creation . The two pieces of poetry in the next four pages prove this notion … wrong .
“ critters ” by Kaleb Tutt left the judges feeling afraid , even when the darkness lifted and their eyes were opened . The poem is so powerful in its imagery that it is like reading a horror novel in all its glory .
“ A Red Witch ” by Clay Hunt pushes the boundaries of metaphor , squeezing it dry for the best impact . The poem touches on mental illness so effectively that it ’ s chilling .
Though these two poems represent two different subgenres , that of horror and psychological realism , they both meld beautifully together to demonstrate the best in TDS poetry . Much like our fiction winners , Tutt and Hunt lead the way in what kind of poetry TDS wants more of .
TDS proudly presents the winners of Best Poetry , Mr . Kaleb Tutt and Mr . Clay Hunt , two of the best wordsmiths in our modern history . Enjoy !
