Fashion Do's and Dont's
What You Can and Can't Wear and How to Work with It
Due to the all too well-known Sumptuary Laws it is a matter of life or death, literally, that you know what you can wear and what wardrobe assets would have you sent to the gallows before you could even step foot onto the street.
Maria Giuseppina Muzzarelli has observed for all of us why these laws may be present and how they effect all levels of class. As many may already know, sumptuary laws regulate the clothing that we are allowed to wear. The laws seem to be predominately more "symbolic than of actual use" to help regulate consumption. They are intended to "direct the spending of an economy, which may be threatened by excessive importation and lack of investment capital" (Muzzarelli). She also observed that "the laws imposed maintain political order on the social level." With a better understanding of the reasons behind the Sumptuary laws we are all expected to obey, it will now be vital that you know your social class and what clothing is
appropriate to go along with it.
