The job description lists 15 primary responsibilities including being able to mentor junior team members and champion sustainability initiatives and by extension corporate social responsibility work as well. It requires understanding and experience in reading and interpreting profit and loss statements and analysing performance. Marketers run away, when it comes to numbers. How ready are you to take a look at a profit and loss statement and extract some insights. How have you built your analytical skills? And don’ t be deceived by the job title. This job requires someone with 10 plus years of experience and prefers someone with an MBA.
The job market has become extremely competitive and you have to be prepared. We have not even assessed the positions that require you to be a marketer, a communications creative, a data analyst, a web developer and a photographer in one role.
Here are some tips that can help you prepare for opportunities. These tips can help you at any stage of your career.
• Identify someone who is in a similar role to the one you aspire to move into.
• Have a conversation with them to understand their journey.
• Do a self-audit and rate yourself in the areas indicated on the job description.
• Ask 2 of your trusted friends to rate you as well. Is your rating similar to how your friends have rated you? Be truthful with yourself.
• Come up with a plan for improvement or learning. There are so many sources of information these days. YouTube has a lot of content. So does the exploding social media platform TikTok. Podcasts are also great sources of learning.
• Find opportunities where you can practice the skills. If necessary, you can volunteer to serve as a board member or at a church group to build your leadership skills.
• Don’ t just sit pretty and moan about how your current job doesn’ t give you a chance to learn new things. Take action. No one can stop you from learning if you really want to be a life-long learner.
• Attend industry events and network
with people who might open doors for you.
• Build your confidence to speak to people who have walked the path ahead of you. After all, either they will ignore you or they will help you. You never know until you ask.
• Sign up for a formal course. Professional courses can make a big difference in helping you learn practical skills. Academic courses can boost your CV and help you ground your thinking.
So next time there is an opportunity and you apply for it, whether you get it or not, get ready. Sometimes a rejection letter is just a stepping stone to helping you see where you need to grow.
Wishing you all the success in your career progression.
