How the GTCT wants to help
The Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust , or GTCT , is Geraint Thomas OBE ’ s independent charitable trust , which launched in 2021 with the support of Welsh Cycling and is complemented by Trustees from Business , Sport and the third sector . The GTCT has a very simple objective : to get 5,000 more young people cycling in the next ten years .
Cycling is proven to aid both physical and mental health , helps build independence and confidence , provides family with an opportunity to exercise together , and forms new friendships , all whilst building personal mental resilience .
But while we recognise that riding bikes provides many benefits , there are plenty of barriers preventing young people from taking part in cycling . These include the affordability of bikes , skills to perform repairs , basic safety equipment , secure storage , knowledge of how to ride safely and accessible opportunities to ride . Cycling needs to be opened up to a more diverse audience , too , ensuring young people from all protected characteristics and social backgrounds are given the opportunity to participate . This is where the GTCT comes in .
Geraint Thomas said : “ It ’ s trying to get more people and young kids into cycling and give them access to bikes . It all came about when I realised that the only reason I got into riding was because I lived down the road from Cardiff ’ s Maindy Centre cycling track , and if I didn ’ t live where I did , I wouldn ’ t have raced a bike .”
“ We ’ re trying to make cycling more accessible – if people are getting into cycling , we want to help them to enjoy riding their bikes .”
