Interview with Aisling Winston

Question #1: Why did you start playing/coaching Ultimate Frisbee?

Answer #1: I started playing mainly because it was a sport I had never heard of, plus, I just wanted to see what it was like using a Frisbee as the “ball”. Once I started playing, I began to love the sport and all of its values and I strongly encourage others to play too. I began coaching because I wanted students to learn the sport and to make more people aware that Ultimate Frisbee exists and is a lot of fun!

Question #2: What are your opinions on coaching the Green Hope Ultimate team?

Answer #2: I enjoy teaching new members every year how to play Ultimate. The Green Hope team has been very successful for the last couple of years, even being the champions at last year’s Easterns tournament. Many of the players who join stay for the rest of their high school career and become very skilled players that I can rely on to help me teach new players.

Spirit of the Game

Question #3: How do you feel about the current opportunities for high school boys and girls in the Triangle Area?

Answer #3: Almost every high school in the Triangle Area has an Ultimate team, though some, like Green Hope, only considers it a club because there are no Green Hope teachers to sponsor the team. I think that the club deserves to become a team since there are so many members. During the summer, the Triangle Area has summer teams that eventually travel to Minnesota for the Youth Championship Club. We send one Under-19 girls’ team, one Under-16 boys’ team, and one Under-19 boys’ team.

Question #4: What, in your opinion, makes Ultimate Frisbee a unique sport?

Answer #4: Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport that still involves players to be engaged with each other. Ultimate Frisbee also has what is known as “The Spirit of the Game”. The Spirit of the Game emphasizes good sportsmanship above all else; you cannot insult other team members, or your own, and you must always be positive, whether you are on the field or the sideline. I think this makes Ultimate a beautiful sport.

Question #5: Who do you recommend Ultimate Frisbee to?

Answer #5: Ultimate Frisbee is for anyone who enjoys non-contact sports that are still very intense. People who want to fly or jump to the sky will like Ultimate because it involves a lot of jumping and diving (by experienced players mostly because it takes guts and experience) for the disc.
