Despite losing five straight games, all by 11 points or less, including a 77-66 loss to Texas in Norman on Feb. 17, the Sooners still boast the best player in the country in freshman Trae Young. Young was still leading the nation in scoring, averaging 29 points per game through mid- February. The Sooners, who steadily dropped from No. 4 in the AP poll to No. 23 before sliding out of the top 25 all together, will still make the NCAA Tournament, although it would certainly help their prospects (and their seeding) if they rebounded with a few wins, and especially if they could make some waves at the Big 12 Tournament. Oklahoma State looks to be one of the classic bubble teams for the tournament, alternating between impressive road victories over ranked teams and disappointed home losses to unranked teams through the first half of February. A 90-70 loss at TCU on Feb. 17 was their third loss in four games and the Cowboys needed a boost down the stretch to improve their tournament chances. Among the women, Oklahoma State was ranked No. 21 before suffering difficult home losses to No. 3 Baylor and No. 6 Texas on Feb. 13 and 17, respectively. While those defeats hurt, though, the Cowgirls remain among the second-tier of women’s teams, and at 18-8 on the year, they should enter the NCAA tournament as a No. 5 or 6 seed. The Sooner women, meanwhile, were 14-12 but had won four of their last five, including an impressive overtime road win over West Virginia Feb. 17. They will be on the bubble for the tournament, and perhaps need a strong performance at the Big 12 Tournament to make it in.
