Western Avenue, Oklahoma City, vzds.com) has proudly upheld its motto “Food, Booze, and Tradition,” and has strongly supported locally- known as well as nationally- known musicians. “Acoustic open mic has been gaining a lot of traction since we introduced the new six- week Acoustic Songwriters Competition during open mic every Tuesday at 8 p.m.,” said VZD’s music director Joe Hopkins. “At the end of each open mic night, the staff votes for a finalist, and the finals are at every seventh week. Judged by music industry professionals, the winner opens the next sold- out show for a national act that fits their genre. It’s a priceless opportunity for aspiring artists to open for big names,” Hopkins explained. “Also, every open mic is professionally recorded. I started doing that as a way to help members of the music community who cannot afford studio time to cut an acoustic demo,” added Hopkins. “The shows we book throughout the rest of the week include indie, blues, rock, country, jazz, and everything in between,” said Hopkins. If you get the munchies while soaking in the music, try out one of the offerings on the gastropub menu, the John Wayne Burger. It’s a class act, with ground beef stuffed with VZD’s homemade brisket, barbecue sauce, charred onions, and cheddar.
