Dave Lovell:
The man behind Cactus Jones
By Chris B. Critter
TULSA, Okla. - The multi-talented
Dave Lovell wears many musical
hats. His red dirt Americana band
Cactus Jones, where he is the
frontman, shows a lot of promise,
and he also serves other musical
roles in additional area bands.
Dave Lovell
A native Tulsan, Lovell got his
first gig with J. Scott McCoy (of
“Cowgirl Crazy” fame.) Then Lovell
moved to music city and honed
his musical craft in Nashville. He
spent a few years learning about
the business side of making music.
Nashville was also the right place
to further develop his songwriting
skills, and keep active serving as a
bass player for other artists.
Of his time in Nashville, Lovell
says “I made a ton of friends who
I’m still in contact with today. One
of them, Ray Scott, got picked
up by Warner Brothers and I got
to tour with him in 2008.” Lovell
gives a lot of love to Scott who he
says is…“still putting out albums,
and right now he’s in Europe on
tour. Ward Davis used to be his
keyboard player too. He was on
the road with us in 2008.”
Lovell eventually moved back to
the Tulsa area but music is still in
his blood. Beyond Cactus Jones
Lovell is keeping busy in support
of another Oklahoma singer/
songwriter, Trett Charles. Charles
is firefighter and first responder,
but he felt a calling to perform
country music as well. But Charles
has uniquely dedicated his musical
efforts to people suffering from
depression and thoughts of suicide.
It’s an ambitious project, but
Charles has already seen some
significant success. Lovell is very
proud that the Trett Charles Band
was selected to open for Stoney
LaRue when that Okie red dirt
legend recently performed at
Cain’s ballroom. and the Venue Shrine on Friday,
Apr. 27, where they’ll be opening
for Bart Crow.
Lovell is currently booking Cactus
Jones shows for the future and
upcoming Tulsa area; Trett Charles
Band performances include the Iron
Horse Pub on Saturday, Mar. 24, Dave Lovell, Cactus Jones, and the
Trett Charles Band are all active
on your favorite social media
platforms.
