Despite an 89-76 loss on Jan. 6 to No. 2 West Virginia, the Sooners still sat 12-2 on the year and were 2-1 in the Big 12. The emergence of freshman Trae Young as one of the nation’s top players has catapulted OU into the top 10, ranking No. 8 on Jan. 8. Young led the entire nation in scoring, averaging 29.2 points per game, as well as 10.2 assists per contest. Oklahoma State has enjoyed a pretty good season as well, despite getting hammered 109-89 in a Bedlam game on Jan. 3 in Norman. After defeating Iowa State on Jan. 6, the Cowboys were 11-4 on the year, and 1-2 in the very competitive Big 12, which had five teams ranked 16 th or higher. The Oklahoma State women were even more impressive, ranking No. 20. Following a 96-82 victory Jan. 7 over OU in Bedlam in Stillwater, the Cowgirls were 12-3 on the year (3-1 in the Big 12), with each of the three teams they lost to ranked among the top seven in the nation. After scoring 31 points with eight rebounds against OU, OSU senior transfer Loryn Goodwin ranked 10 th in the country with 22.4 points per game. The loss in Bedlam dropped the Sooner women to 7-8 on the year (2-2 in the Big 12), but they looked pretty solid against a good OSU team and should continue to improve as the season progresses. The University of Tulsa’s men has also gotten off to a good start, sporting a 10-6 record as of Jan. 8. After losing 71-59 at OSU on Dec. 19, the Golden Hurricane rebounded with wins in their first three American Athletic Conference games, including a double overtime win over Connecticut, before falling to Memphis 76-67 on Jan. 6. The Tulsa women have been somewhat up and down this year, starting off 8-8, with a 2-1 mark in the American. Also, Oral Roberts started out 2-9 (with losses to both Tulsa and OSU), but since mid-December, has stabilized a bit, going 5-2 through early January, including a 3-0 mark to start off Summit League play. The Golden Eagles women began the season even better, going 10-6, including a 2-1 mark in Summit League action. www.thecurrentbuzz.net | 37
