Fast-forward a few decades and that entrepreneurial middle- schooler now owns Guitar House of Tulsa, buying, selling and swapping instruments at both the original location near Admiral & Sheridan and the new shop in the Tulsa Arts District. While reptiles are no longer his currency of choice, the game is still the same. “I’m a hunter,” Winn explained. “I like to go out and find instruments.” In a perfect world, he’d keep them all. “As far as selling, I don’t like to sell guitars,” he laughed. “I like to buy guitars. That’s what I really love to do.” Winn is frequently on the road, traveling to shows across the country in search of inventory. The Admiral location predominantly features new instruments, while the shop in the Tulsa Arts District is a guitar lover’s dream. “The downtown shop specializes more in the vintage gear that’s hard to find. We also have a lot of historical pieces that people want to see like Carl Radle’s bass and Leon McAuliffe’s triple neck steel guitar. It’s not just another guitar shop, it’s also a destination for people who don’t play.” That inventory, the ambiance and the sweet location in the heart of downtown attract the pros, as well. Although Winn prefers not to kiss and tell, plenty of music legends have found their way from the Cain’s Ballroom, the Brady Theater and the BOK Arena into his store. “I’m a fan of live music. I get to meet a lot of people who make that and help them find the right tools,” Winn said. “That’s rewarding.” A native of Stillwater, Winn is settling into his new home in Tulsa. “My Tulsa customers are all great. We have lots of regulars, and everyone has greeted me with open arms.” For more information, visit facebook.com/ GuitarHouseOfTulsa. www.thecurrentbuzz.net | 17
