shake Tulsa
By Ken Lane
Steve Aoki
TULSA, Okla. – While some
musicians strive to express
themselves with the pluck of a
string, the howl of a saxophone,
or the beat of a rickety trap set,
there is a new generation of music
makers who are harnessing the
power of the sample to make
crowds bounce.
As a mosaic artist carefully
places pieces of ceramic tile and
glass in an array to craft works
of art, the creators of electronic
dance music (EDM) carefully align
synthesized nuggets of sound into
an elaborate musical tapestry - in
many instances, in real-time for a
live audience.
Though EDM has risen to its highest
popularity in the past decade,
shaking the foundations of music
venues and outdoor festival
grounds the world over, the roots
of electronic dance music go back
to the rave dance clubs of 1980s
Europe and 1970s Jamaican
block parties. Combining the mix
practices of Jamaican dancehall
and dub producers, digital
technology won out over manual
mixing of analog music - even
shaping the texture of beats and
pace to reflect their digital origins.
More than music, an EDM
experience is not complete
without elaborate lighting, fog,
and even acrobatics frequently
synchronized to the various beats.
Yes, most human senses are made
captive by an electronic dance
music experience, even the sense
Keys N Krates
of feeling comes into play as
lower frequencies can resonate in
concert-goers dancing feet and
chests. Stepping into an EDM event
can feel like a parallel dimension
that many travel the world to
experience.
Oklahoma fans of the musical
movement can delight in some
of EDM’s heavy-hitters coming to
Tulsa in February 2018. The EDM/
instrumentalist hybrid trio of Keys
N Krates will be gracing the stage
of the historic Cain’s Ballroom on
February 14, and the infamous
one-man arena-shaker Steve Aoki
will bring his skills and subwoofers
to rattle even the back balcony of
Brady Theater on February 27.
