A homecoming for
St. Vincent
By Julie Wenger Watson
TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa-born,
Grammy-award winning
Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent,
will rock the Brady Theater
on Feb. 26 with her distinct
brand of experimental music.
A former member of choral
rock band The Polyphonic
Spree and Sufjan Stevens’
touring band, the wildly
creative, St. Vincent is
anything but boring. Her “Fear
of the Future” tour follows
on the heels of her October
release MASSEDUCTION,
which debuted in the top 10 of
the Billboard 200.
“Every record I make has an
archetype,” Clark has said
of the new album. “Strange
Mercy was Housewives
on Pills. St. Vincent was
Near-Future Cult Leader.
MASSEDUCTION is different.
It’s pretty first person. You
can’t fact-check it. It’s not a
diary entry, but if you want to
know about my life, listen to
this record.”
According to Clark, the release
is themed around power,
or “all the forces that can
swallow you whole,” as she
describes it. The first single
off the album, “New York,”
includes the line “New York
isn’t New York without you,
love,” which has multiple
meanings for its author.
“The song is a love letter to
the city, too,” said Clark. “To
all my friends and lovers
who’d either moved away or
moved to a different plane of
existence.”
“Pills,” with its rhyming
refrain, “Pills to wake, pills to
sleep, pills pill pills every day
of the week,” looks at a darker
psychosocial pharmaceutical
reality.
Clark says of the inspiration
for the song, “It came to me
after I took sleeping pill.
There’s a pill for everything.
It’s an interesting thing, how
to figure out lifelong anxiety
and depression.”
MASSEDUCTION draws from
Clark’s own experiences.
“I have all this source material
because I never really stop
writing. With this record, I
had a years’ worth of notes
and voice memos that I’d
collected on the road…Here’s
the melody from Amsterdam.
Here’s the lyric from Latvia,
and so on,” she said.
Part of Clark’s creative process
involves challenging and
surprising herself.
“I started playing the guitar
when I was 12 and really
never stopped,” she noted.
“Music is still my entire
identity. There are so many
ways to be creative. With this
record, I really broadened my
palate.”
