TULSA, Okla. – January 27-
28 marks the return of the
Oklahoma Golden Gloves State
Championship tournament. This
prestigious amateur boxing event
takes place at Tulsa’s Greenwood
Cultural Center and will draw
fighters from around the state.
Winners will advance to a regional
tournament in Wichita in April and
from there to the National Golden
Gloves Tournament of Champions in
Omaha in May.
Golden Gloves boxing has a
long and proud history, and many
Oklahoma fighters have been
national champions, along with
boxers like Joe Louis, Muhammad
Ali, and Oscar De La Hoya.
“We’re excited to be holding this
state championship in Tulsa,” said
Aaron Sloan, owner and head
coach of the Engine Room Boxing
Gym and the event’s promoter. “It’s
a great move forward for the sport
of amateur boxing in our state, and
Golden Gloves competition is
fierce, even at the state level. Tulsa
boxers Jeremiah Milton, 23, and
Andre Brown, 22, will be fighting
in January. Both were winners in
their weight divisions for the 2017
Ringside World Championships. This
was Brown’s second consecutive win.
“Amateur boxing is growing in
Oklahoma, and there is a bright
future for the sport,” said Sloan,
who coached Milton and Brown
at Ringside. “The Golden Gloves
tournaments bring in some of
the best athletes from around
the country and gives them the
opportunity to compete on an elite
level.”
