TULSA, Okla. – All too frequently,
citizens of their own city miss
unique opportunities for
education and entertainment
that lie in wait just beneath
their noses. One such marvelous
curiosity is the Thomas

Gilcrease Institute of American
History and Art - also known as
the Gilcrease Museum of Art.
Founded by successful oilman
and Native American art
enthusiast Thomas Gilcrease,
the Gilcrease Museum remains
the largest collection of art of
the American West in the world,
houses over 100,000 books and
over 300,000 relics dating as
far back as 1494. Surrounding
the complex are sprawling
gardens that cover around
23 acres - each with a theme
inspired by the museum itself.
The museum, now under the
management of the University
of Tulsa in partnership with the
City of Tulsa, continues to host
frequent community events to
inspire future generations of
Oklahomans.
Though eventually amassing
millions, Thomas Gilcrease’s
humble beginnings were in a
one-room schoolhouse and the
nickname “Indian Tom” because
of his one-eighth Creek hertiage.
It was this Creek heritage that
would later grant him 160 acres

southwest of Tulsa on land
that would eventually be at the
epicenter of the Oklahoma Oil
Boom. A millionaire by his early
20s, Gilcrease began to amass
a large collection of Native
American art. Even though
the collection is celebrated
worldwide, around the time
Thomas Gilcrease started his
collection, the art world was
largely uninterested in Native
American art. Gilcrease later
deeded his entire collection to
the City of Tulsa in 1958.
Regular community events and
classes are held at the Gilcrease
Museum, including Mini Masters,
a program geared towards
ages 3-6, adult drawing classes
every Sunday, live musical
performances, lectures, and
much more. The museum is
also excited to present Gilcrease
On Wheels - a mobile museum
experience that travels to schools
all over Oklahoma.
