TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma
filmmaker Sterlin Harjo knows
how to tell a story. A member of
the Seminole Nation, Harjo uses
his camera to bring entire worlds
to life on the screen – worlds
populated by Native American
people sharing their narrative
from their perspective against the
backdrop of Harjo’s home state.
While well known for his critically
acclaimed, award-winning feature
films like 2007’s Four Sheets to the
Wind and 2008’s Barking Water,
each of which premiered at the
prestigious Sundance Film Festival,
and 2015’s Mekko, Harjo’s vision
and passion extend to music, as
well. He has directed numerous
music
videos
for great
Oklahoma musicians
like Desi & Cody, John
Calvin Abney and John Moreland.
“I love making music videos,” Harjo
said. “I think deep down, I’m a
disgruntled musician. Making a
music video gets me closer to that.
I get to interpret someone else’s
music and be a small part of the
conversation of that song.”
Harjo’s a big music fan, too, with
eclectic taste.
“Right now I’m listening to John
Prine, Vince Gill and Kendrick
Lamar.
That has
been my
airplane playlist,”
Harjo explained. “I also
have a mix of classical and mood
music that I write to.”
As interesting and complex as the
characters he creates, Harjo isn’t
one to sit still for long, nor limit
himself or his creativity. His latest
project has an eerie twist.
“I’m writing a script that takes
place in the 1800s,” he commented.
“It’s a Southern Gothic that take
place in a fictitious Seminole village
right after removal to Indian
Territory.”
Although there are many reasons
a filmmaker might want to settle in
L.A. or New York, for now, Harjo is
content to remain in the state where
he was born – close to family and
friends.
“The trees, the people, it’s a
comfortable living,” Harjo said
about living in Tulsa. “I like going
to The Colony and hearing great
musicians play. I love my family. I
love the history here.”
