JENKS, Okla. – Tulsa got real lucky
when the Oklahoma Aquarium
decided to break ground there,
and when something is in our own
backyard, we tend to forget that
it presents a perfect opportunity
to get out of the house on a cold
winter’s day for an educational,
enlightening experience.
I visited the Oklahoma Aquarium
a few years back, and I gotta say,
they hired some great staffers;
everyone there really knew their
stuff, the layout is great for kids
and adults, and there’s plenty of
education to be had, but it’s hidden
so deep in the fun, no one will be
the wiser.
You’ll want to see (just because
they are so darn cute) are the
Beavers and Otters Feed Show at
11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. There
are piranha, eel, and striper feed
shows on Mondays and Fridays,
and they have baby bull shark tour
open to a limited audience a few
days per month. Check their site for
more.
Sea turtle Island is a big favorite
(you cannot bring strollers, food
or drinks in) as are the touch tanks
where visitors can touch various
sea creatures, but the walk-through
shark exhibit is scary, serene and
surreal all at the same time.
What struck me almost immediately
was their ability to engage and
excite attendees while alerting
us to the issues in our ecosystems;
showing us how integrated we all
are without being preachy.
Tickets are $16 adults, $14 for
seniors/military and $12 for
children 3-12 years of age (2 and
under attend for free.). If money is
an issue, invite friends and get the
group rates along with deals you
can score with AAA membership or
your Tulsa Zoo Membership. Plenty
of cool deals with fantastic coupon
codes could keep more bills in your
pocket, so shop around. The OK
Aquarium offers deals for vets,
seniors, little kids and real little
kids as well as parking deals. You
might want to consider an annual
membership to really save some
bucks.
The Oklahoma Aquarium is in Jenks
at 300 Aquarium Drive, right on
the banks of the beautiful Arkansas
River. Look them up on Facebook,
the web (okaquarium.org) or call
(918) 296-3474.
