June 14 is Flag Day here in the United States , land of the grand ol ’, high flyin ’ stars and stripes forever !

Countless men and women , including , but not limited to , active duty military have fought to

protect their nations from oppressors . Learning about these flags doesn ’ t make you a super-nerd like Sheldon Cooper at all , but rather more appreciative and aware of the world around you .
Your public libraries are great places to learn about the flags of the U . S . and the world . Be sure to check with your local civic officials .
Father ’ s Day
Shout outs to all the dads of the world – Sunday , June 18 , is Father ’ s Day . Just like your mothers , you wouldn ’ t be here without the active participation , at least initially , of a father . Seems most of us get dad manly stuff for Father ’ s Day gifts like golfing and fishing equipment , camoanythings and items revolving around grilling / outdoor kitchen . like to suggest having dad over for a cook-out in place of , or in addition to any gift-giving that may go on ( even though you and I both know he ’ s THE GRILLMASTER ). Or take him camping , whatever it takes to spend some time with the old man . He , and his wisdom , won ’ t be around forever .
No matter what , our hats are off to all you fathers out there . Except the dead-beat ones , in which case we hope you get the help you need and have a change of heart before it ’ s too late .
Summer Solstice
It ’ s press time and we ’ re weeks away from Summer Solstice ( June 21 ), but we ’ re already working to the sounds of summer ( birds , childrens ’ laughing , water splashing , Dave Matthews , etc .). Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs late on the night of June 20 , making June 21 the “ longest day ” of the year – in terms of daylight hours . Remember in summer , it ’ s best to get your most strenuous tasks done before the sun gets too far up in the sky , and again after 7 p . m . ‘ til dark . Hence the siesta – remain indoors during the heat of the day ( think siesta , mis amigos !).
