JM: You don’t seem like a typical computer nerd. Are you? Why or why not? Joe Mack: Who were you named after, or how did you get the “Joe” tag? Joey Williams: My mother was just a few weeks away from labor with me and still hadn’t picked a name. She and my older cousin, I believe he was 5 at the time, attended a family gathering. He approached her and asked her what my name was and she said, “I don’t know yet. What do you think?” He replied, “How about Joseph?” She said okay, and that was that. Joseph was replaced by Joey and reserved only for when I was in trouble. Then I guess people got irritated with the letter ‘Y’. It’s a vowel. It’s a consonant. JW: The main plus I see in this is to help stop terrorism, which is great and all until we start arresting people for crimes they haven’t even thought of yet. Another plus is using this to take down child pornographers and human traffickers. The only downside to this is the lack of privacy, but if you’ve got nothing to hide and aren’t doing anything illegal there’s really nothing to worry about. If you wanna talk dirty to your girlfriend over email and you’re both of age, those emails will just sit in a massive building full of servers in Arizona. JM: You must have a lot of friends that seek your IT expertise...what’s the craziest project you’ve been asked to tackle to help out a friend? JM: Do you think Oklahoma is ahead of, on pace with, or behind in the IT sector? JW: It was a friend of my cousin’s and he need a small crew to help cable a Bass Pro Shop in Chattanooga, Tenn. Most of my time spent there was about 50 feet in the air on a scissor lift. I think it was a total of 72 cables we had to run between myself and three other guys. JM: Congress is changing the way internet providers can function and access our data; what are the plusses and minuses in doing so? JW: Definitely behind. We’re actually behind on everything which I personally think is a good thing. We get to watch the coastal states try stuff and when they screw up, we learn from their mistakes. Only the most popular movies and music make it to Oklahoma. Also, if there’s a massive tidal wave or flood, we’re in the middle of the country. Kind of. Just go north if that happens. JM: Where’s your favorite place to get a cup of joe? JW: I always brew mine JW: I’m a nerd for sure, but not a typical one. One of my favorite past times is writing automation scripts to self- execute at specific times on my computer. Mainly for maintenance, but I’m always improving them to be smarter. What makes me an atypical ‘nerd’ is I don’t look like one; I’m lean, but built, I’m not afraid of manual labor, I’m sociable and I still like to party on occasion.
