TULSA, Okla. - Well-known
and well-loved for their
national radio hit “Sister”
off their 1995 major label
release Foma, Oklahoma-
born alternative rock band
The Nixons toured extensively
for a number of years before
disbanding in 2000. Nearly
two decades later, much
to the delight of their large
and loyal fan base, the
band reunited with their core
lineup for two shows – one
in Oklahoma City and one
in Dallas. This month, The
Nixons - Zac Maloy (vocals,
guitar), Jesse Davis (guitar),
Ricky Brooks (bass) and
John Humphrey (drums) -
continue the reunion streak
with a show at Tulsa’s Cain’s
Ballroom on June 23.
Zac Maloy, now based in
Nashville, is a successful
songwriter who has penned
songs with folks like Carrie
Underwood, Blake Shelton
and Tim McGraw. He is also
the founder of the Oklahoma
Songwriters Festival, which
takes place June1-3 in
Oklahoma City. While Maloy
has enjoyed his post-Nixons
career, he was thrilled with
the chance to reunite with
his former bandmates with
whom he shared so many
years on the road.
“We were such a part of
each others’ lives, and then
you just don’t see each
other. It’s a strange thing
that bands do,” Maloy
commented. “It’s been
Maloy is particularly excited
to play Cain’s, a venue,
along with Tree’s in the Deep
Ellum district of Dallas, that
he strongly associates with
the band.
“When we were coming
up, we were lucky enough
to open for Kiss in Madison
Square Garden. We played
Red Rocks five times; we
played the Whisky in L.A.,”
Maloy recalled. “I always
put Cain’s on that list. It’s like
an iconic room for anyone
who knows anything about
music. So when we sold out
the Cain’s Ballroom for the
first time, that was a big deal
to us. I’m so excited to be
playing there again.”
While fans can expect to
hear their favorites, they may
also be treated to some new
material from the band.
“We have a new song that
we’ve just written,” Maloy
said.
The song is called “Song
of the Year,” and it was
created with the help of
modern technology.
“In fact, I was in my studio
earlier sort of chopping up
the bass guitar that Ricky
played in Utah,” Maloy
explained. “The drums
were cut in Oklahoma
City; the guitars were cut
in Oklahoma City, and the
vocals were cut in Nashville.
So, it’s not the super feel
good story of us all sitting
around and brainstorming. It
was quite literally me singing
and playing a song idea into
my iPhone and group text
messaging it to the other
three dudes and saying, ‘Do
you like this?’ And I said to
John (Humphrey), ‘Can you
get a studio and track drums
and we’ll track everything on
top of it?’”
Back when Maloy was
graduating from Ada High
School and heading to the
University of Oklahoma, he
never imagined he would
have a long-term career in
music, but he’s more than
happy with the way things
turned out.
“It’s been a awesome
ride - a little bit of a roller
coaster sometimes, but
yeah,” he laughed. “I would
have never guessed it, but I
wouldn’t change a thing.”
