While many of McMurtry’s
songs deal with the social
and political, his latest
release, 2015’s Complicated
Game takes a more personal
turn, with beautiful, literate
songs that are about
relationships and “the big
old world versus the poor
little farmer or fisherman,”
as McMurtry tells it. Tulsa
fans will be treated to song
selections from throughout
McMurtry’s career.

Tulsa, Okla. – Austin singer
songwriter James McMurtry
is bringing his full band,
along with his sharp wit, to
Tulsa’s Vanguard Music Hall
Saturday, June 24. Fans know
to expect - a show that’s
as much rowdy, rockin’
honky-tonk as it is astute and
insightful musical storytelling.
While McMurtry, with his
cleverly crafted songs and
skillful playing, can hold his
own as a solo performer, he
really enjoys touring with his
band.
“I prefer a band. There’s
more energy,” McMurtry
explained. “It’s kind of a
circular energy. You can
bounce the energy off the
crowd and off the band
and off you, and you can
keep it going. With a solo
performance, it’s more
linear. It’s just you and the
crowd, and it’s harder to
tell what they’re thinking
because they’re just sitting
there listening for the
most part.” According to
McMurtry, his favorite venues
are big and spacious,
with a bar at the back. He
likes a responsive, multi-
generational crowd.
“That kind of crowd is really
good, because then you
have your listeners, and you
also have your 20-somethings
that are into it. You have to
break through to younger
people, otherwise your
crowd is going to get old
and die and you won’t have
a career anymore.”
McMurtry’s first album Too
Long in the Wasteland
(1989) was produced by
John Mellencamp. In 1996,
he received a Grammy
nomination for Long Form
Music Video for “Where’d
You Hide the Body” and
1997’s It Had to Happen
received the American Indie
Award for Best Americana
Album. In 2006, Childish
Things and “We Can’t Make
it Here” won the Americana
Music Awards for Album
and Song of the Year,
