STILLWATER, Okla. - It’s time
for one of Oklahoma’s
most popular, and perhaps
weirdest, cookout slash blow-
out music festivals. The 26 th
annual Tumbleweed Calf Fry
starts May 4 in Stillwater, and
this year, it includes three
nights of the best Red Dirt
music acts around.
Some might think it’s weird
to go all out for a party that
revolves around cooking
and eating calf fries: a dish
made of peeled and deep-
fried bull testicles. But even
though this protein-packed
local delicacy is delicious
and fun to eat, it’s really
just an excuse to party with
a couple thousand friends
and listen to great live
music at the Tumbleweed
Amphitheater.
The “Weed,” as locals call it,
opened in 1981 and quickly
gained a reputation as a real
country/western honky-tonk
with local and national music
acts on stage and rodeos
out back. The first big out-
door show was in 1991, and
the main act was a former
Tumbleweed bouncer, Garth
Brooks.
That party started the
“Testicle Festival” tradition,
which has grown larger
every year. In 2003,
the Tumbleweed was
recognized as one of the
Top 10 Most Historic Country
Music Sites to visit in the
United States by County
Music Weekly.
This year’s line-up includes
The Turnpike Troubadours,
Jason Boland & The
Stragglers, Josh Abbott Band,
Casey Donahew, and Cody
Canada And The Departed.
Make sure to check out
the full schedule and plan
ahead, because the Calf Fry
has been known to run two
stages at once.
The party starts each night
at 5:30, Thursday, May 4
through Saturday, May 6, at
Tumbleweed Dancehall, on
Lakeview & Country Club
Road in Stillwater. Tickets
range from $35 for a one-
day general admission ticket
to $160 for a three-day VIP
ticket and are available
at the door or at www.
tumbleweed.preferredfan.
com.
The event is all-ages, so bring
the kids. Tumbleweed has
also teamed up Calamity
Jane’s Apparel to create
several original t shirt designs
for Calf Fry 2017, since you
will need to brag to all your
friends about being there.
