TULSA, Okla. - It’s hard to
believe that the Beach Boys
go back over 55 years, and
it’s even harder to believe
that their own Brian Wilson
is making a stop in Tulsa to
say a final goodbye to their
biggest album, Pet Sounds.
Released in 1966, Pet Sounds
is thought to be the album
that took the Beach Boys
from plastic surfing music
into a more adult sound
that merged with the newer
counterculture of the late
‘60s with “Good Vibrations”
being the biggest single.
Shortly after its release, Brian
left the band to deal with
mental health issues and
addiction, leaving the rest
of the members to carry on.
By the mid-‘70s, they were
labelled an oldies act.
By the 1990s, two of the other
members, Dennis and Carl
Wilson had both passed on
and the remaining members
tried to carry on the Beach
Boys legacy with nominal
success. Despite these
tragedies, the Beach Boys
were revered; over 80 songs
landed the charts, they’ve
been billed as “one of the
influential bands of all time,”
and were listed as No. 12 in
Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest
Artists of All Time.” Topping
it off was the induction of
the remaining Beach Boys
into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in 1988. enough to watch and listen
to Wilson share his musical
genius for one night in a
cozy venue where it’s a bit
like listening to him play in
your living room; find tickets
at www.protix.com, Starship
Records in Tulsa or (866) 977-
6849, range from $49.50-$125
and all seats are reserved.
Doors open at 7 p.m.
Brian’s role as key songwriter
for the band should make
for an evening that any fan
will never forget. Despite Pet
Sounds’ lukewarm success
when it first released, its later
recognition is exclusively
attributed to Brian Wilson’s
issues with mental illness
and drugs. Now considered
a colossal success, we are
infinitely fortunate to have
the brainchild of this man
who was years ahead of his
time bring his masterpiece
catalog to our neck of the
woods. Find out about Brian’s
other tour dates at www.
brianwilson.com.
Making the experience even
more magical, it all happens
at the Brady Theater on
May 16. We’ll be fortunate
