Country singer
Paul
Bogart
heads home to
wrap 2017
By Julie Wenger Watson
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville
transplant and Oologah native
Paul Bogart is the real deal.
While many country singers
croon about small town life,
pickup trucks and cattle, a
surprising number have never
spent time in a saddle nor
traveled south of the Mason-
Dixon Line. A professional roper
who was raised on a ranch just
west of Oologah, Okla., Bogart
has lived the life, and that
authenticity comes through in
his writing and his voice.
“My dad raised beef cows, and
we started roping calves when
I was little. That was my whole
upbringing,” Bogart explained.
“We did the rodeo thing and
showed horses in the American
Quarter Horse Association’s
roping events.”
Leather, Bogart’s latest release,
combines his traditional country
sound with plenty of gospel
and American roots. The video
for “All That Cowboy Jazz,” an
infectious Western swing tune
off the new album, was shot at
Iron Horse, a bar in Bogart’s
hometown.
“The director of the video said
we needed a dive cowboy bar,
and I said, ‘I know where one is
because I’ve played it,’” Bogart
laughed. “It seemed like the
whole town showed up, whether
it was to support me or just out
of curiosity about the Nashville
film crew. It was a fun night for
sure.”
Bogart closes the month (and
the year!) with a string of
Oklahoma dates, stopping at the
Iron Horse Dec. 29, Ramona’s
Cherokee Casino Dec. 30 and
Claremore’s Dog Iron Saloon at
Will Rogers Downs on Dec. 31.
“I’m just singing about what I
know, what I grew up on,” he
said. “Especially with this new
album, I just wanted to do the
music that I love. I told my
producer, ‘let’s go make great
music. Let’s record the songs we
want to record and not worry
about whether or not current
country radio is going to play
them. Let’s just do authentic
music that fits me, and if people
like it, that’s awesome.’”
