OKLAHOMA CITY – The holidays rapidly are approaching , and what says Christmas more than a song about a happily dysfunctional family gathering as depicted in the joyous holiday song , “ Merry Christmas With the Fam-O-Lee ”?
“ Carve the Turkey Turn the ball game on Mix margaritas when the eggnog ’ s gone Send somebody to the Quick Pak Store We need some ice and an extension cord A can of bean dip and some Diet Rites A box of tampons , some Marlboro Lights Hallelujah everybody say , “ Cheese ” Merry Christmas from the family !”
I really know no one who drinks Diet Rites , but I know everyone will love Robert Earl Keen ’ s Fam-O-Lee
Back to the Country Jamboree . In its sixth year , Oklahoma City and Fayetteville , Ark ., are stops along the way of his 19-city tour .
“ Merry Christmas with the Famo-Lee ” was first recorded on the Houston native ’ s 1994 album Gringo Honeymoon , and quickly rose to audience-participation cult status with its twangy , slow shoulder-swinging melody . Punctuated by lyrics that describes family members constantly going to the convenience store for various sundries between drinking adult beverages , it ’ s just like all families do . Over time , an entire variety show with comedy developed from the song .
According to the press release , “ the set list includes Keen classics , like ‘ Merry Christmas with the Famo-lee ,’ as well as a tip of the hat to legendary musicians like Bob Dylan , Tom Petty , Dwight Yoakam
and Neil Young . It will be country , but we will explore the countryrock side of things , and we might mashup a couple of tunes ,” Keen said . “ If you ’ re not in the holiday spirit now , you will be when you leave this show .”
Make this event the drive : who hasn ’ t cranked Keen ’ s perfectlypenned road trip song “ The Road Goes On Forever ” before hitting the road ?
Also appearing with Keen are The Quebe Sisters .
Tickets are still available at press time to both the Dec . 12 show at The Jones Assembly in Oklahoma City and the Dec . 13 show at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville .
