NME Awards 2012
#TheStyleBeneath
photography by: Emily bennett.
It
was
quite
a
strange
experience
really,
arriving
at
the
NME
Awards
5
hours
before
it
started,
just to hassle our way to
the front, to get full view
of the bands and everyone
turning up. The atmosphere
was
quite
dull
really,
to
begin
with
anyway,
there
were
only
around
10
of
us within the queue, and
nobody really seemed in the
mood for anything exciting.
Whilst in the queue, it was
time
to
take
the
chance
to sit back and relax and
check
out
whateverybody
was wearing, time to see
whether there was a pattern
within people’s dress sense
or not. A strange feeling
came into my mind as I began
to
see
the
big
leather
jackets
approaching
to
join the queue, the strange
feeling
being
that,
these
people
were
representing
something,
something
that
was quite personal to them.
There
was
no
point
just
sitting
there
wondering
what
this
representation
could be, it was time to get
up and start asking some
questions.This
particular
stranger
rocking
skinnyjeans
and
tatty
converse
began
to
walk
closer;
he was my first victim…

“Do you find that your
favourite bands/artists
influence the way in that
you dress?”
“Hello, this might appear
a little strange, but I
am currently creating a
fashion magazine for NME,
and I was wondering what
the thoughts were behind
your outfit, I mean, why
have you chosen to wear
this today?”
This
is
quite
a
tough
question, as everyone adds
bits and bobs to the things
they wear, but I guess I
do, yes. I mean when I first
began
listening
to
The
Libertines,
their
style
just
blew me away, their leather
jackets
looked
amazing,
and that’s when I started
to
wear
them!
I
know
leather
jackets
have
been
around for a while, but I
didn’t used to be phased
by them, and then I went to
see The Libertines live, and
that’s what did it for me!
I’m not really one of those
people
that
plan
what
they’re going to wear the
night before, I never really
put
‘thought’
into
the
outfits I wear, it’s always
just a last minute decision.
For
me,
it’s
not
really
about choosing what I am
going to wear that day; it’s
more like what I feel like
wearing. I’m the kind ‘a guy
that wakes up in a morning
and
throws
something
on.From
looking
at
this
guy his outfit didn’t really
look
that
‘put
together’,
but
it
still
worked.
He
genuinely
looked
like
he
has just got out of bed,
his hair was swaying in all
different
directions,
and
his
shoes
weren’t
even
tied properly. This is the
‘style’
I
was
looking
for,
those
people
that
don’t
really put a lot of effort
into what they wear, but
still
manage
to
pull
off
every outfit they throw on.
“Do you take most of your
style tips from the people
that inspire you?”
I guess I do yeah, not
everything
comes
from
the
bands
that
I
listen
to, but the majority of it
yes.
For
instance
checked,
buttoned up shirts have all
of a sudden came back into
fashion,
Orlando
Weeks
from The Maccabees started
that whole trend for me,
he just looked so cool and
comfortable,
and
I
guess
I
wanted
to
follow
that.
It’s
really
interesting
finding
out
how
different
