wearing them for what they ‘used’ to mean. You know, when sex pistols were around, the entire rebellious /punky feel that went with them, rubbed off onto Dr Martens, and that, is why I wear them today. I don’t just jump on the bandwagon and decide to wear them, I guess you can say I got influenced by Sex Pistols, and joined them in wearing these shoes – kind of carrying on the whole rebellious vibe I guess!“Do you feel that you get influenced by your favourite bands, in the way you decide to dress?” I hate to say it, but yes, I guess I do. I mean, when the whole checked shirts came back into fashion, all the bands were wearing them, Orlando Weeks (lead singer of The Maccabees) never got out of his! When I saw these bands starting to wear them, I decided that they actually looked nice, so I also began to wear them. It’s the same with Leather Jackets, band members also began to wear them too, Noel Gallagher, Pete Doherty, Simon Neil, all of them! And I guess that’s the reason why everybody else has decided there ‘cool again’. “Finally do you feel that NME listeners have a different fashion style to say, pop music listeners?” I guess so yeah, I mean it’s quite difficult to generalize, but in some cases I would definitely say so. Again, I guess it’s just how their favourite artists like to dress, within the NME music world, all the bands and artists tend to dress with a rebellious feel to their outfits, where as in pop, it’s totally different. In the world of NME it’s all about Leather Jackets, Dr Martens and Shirts were as in pop it’s all about Bright Colours, Heels and dresses. indie kid in the street... As Ellis left she shook my hand, and explained how nice it had been for her to have been asked to take part within the interview. NME Talks Fashion has found quite a lot out during this interview, and it has showed how an NME reader feels about the fashion behind music. I hope you as readers have enjoyed this interview, there will be more to come! Written by: emily bennett. Interviewee: Ellis - current NME reader. 20 21
