The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, is a bill signed into law to reform the healthcare industry. ObamaCare’s goal is to provide affordable health insurance for all citizens and to reduce the growth in health care spending. In contrary to popular belief, ObamaCare does not replace private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Children can stay on their parent’s health insurance plans until they are 26, which is an increase from the old rule which allowed the children 18 years unless they attended college. Some aspects of ObamaCare are already in effect, but Oct. 1 will mark the day the new health insurance market will open and solicit business. As Oct. 1 nears, the Saber went to the students for their opinions. “Obamacare is only mandatory if you don’t already have insurance. I think this shouldn’t be mandated because it’s taking away individual preferences. However, this act will allow healthcare/insurance companies to actively provide health care to its citizens.” – Chikilla Parks, junior, nursing “America is the land of opportunity. You should work for what you want not loaf around and use the system as a crutch if you have your own two feet to walk on.” – Dennis Hatcher, sophomore, biology “It’s good for the people who can’t afford it because people need help sometimes.” – Aneal Augustus, junior, undecided “I understand the concept, but I’m not sure if it will work in practice.” – Heather Garza, junior, English

“I think it’s a good idea because I’ve seen a lot of people struggle and they could use the free healthcare.” –Kre’Neshia Allen, freshman, psychology
“I’m concerned about the long lasting effects it’ll have on society.” – Jeff Nieves, junior, chemistry
