12 Women’s Soccer: Lady Cougars plan to prey on the Peach Belt Lady Cougars preparing for a winning season It’s that time again, and The Lady Cougars Soccer Team is gearing up for their upcoming season. With only two returning players, this year’s roster is a team full of fresh faces: eight freshman, ten sophomores and two transfer students. The Lady Cougars have already been named the Peach Belt Conference’s preseason favorite. Team captain, Kelsey Pelletier said, “I’m more excited than ever for this season. The team chemistry is awesome and full of positivity. I think that’s what it really comes down to win games.” Another exciting aspect of this young team is that no player has yet won the esteemed Peach Belt Championship. Such a victory would be the first for this determined and optimistic group of female athletes. When Coach Jay Entlich was asked how far he thinks the team will go, he responded, “I have great expectations for the team. I think they’re ready.” This already seems to be a promising season full of enthusiastic players not only eager to play, but to also win. Their first game of the season, Sept. 6, in Savannah, Georgia, where they will face off against the number one ranked team, The Lady Wolves of University of West Georgia. | Sept 11, 2013 Sports The Saber | Columbus State University Sharifa Jackson Contributing Writer Photos: Jay Armstead Lady Cougars prepare for the season Volleyball kicks off season with success Lady Cougars defeat first opponent in regional tournament Brandi Phillips Staff Writer The team runs it out as practice comes to a end. Friday night on September 6th in the Lumpkin Center, CSU’s volleyball team defeated their opponent, Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) of North Carolina. The Lady Cougars dominated, with a final score of three to zero. Head volleyball coach, Casey Cornett, shares her thrill for the team hours before the big game. Cornett explains, “It is exciting. I have been patiently waiting for this [moment] for a year now, believe it or not. The girls have worked the entire month in August and now they are ready to compete against other teams. It is an honor for them because they get to set the bar high. CSU volleyball is just as competitive as the other sports in the athletic department.” There were quite a few other teams besides CSU and JCSU playing in the volleyball tournament Friday evening. Fort Valley State University from Fort Valley, Georgia and Limestone College from Gaffney, South Carolina visited Columbus’ volleyball tournament as well. Volleyball season will continue for the rest of the semester. General admission is three dollars, students get in free, and children seven through thirteen tickets are one dollar.
