No Pain, No Spain!

This past semester, 17 CSU students from the Turner College of Business journeyed to a far away to a place called Spain. We first arrived in Madrid where the atmosphere smelled of soccer spirit. Right off the bus to the hotel, we could see how passionate the Spanish people are for their beloved sport. Madrid is also full of many attractions, including one of the world’s the top 10 museums and world class bullfighting rings. At the bullfight, the Spanish culture challenged us on the subject of animal cruelty. Anjelica Campbell describes the bullfight as something sad because she did not like seeing the bull get stabbed time after time. Anhjayla Perkins said, “I respect that it is part of their culture, but I did feel that it was inhumane how the bull was tortured and it was flat out gross.” Besides a bit of culture shock, we had the time of our lives traveling southern Spain. Toledo, with a history dating back to the Bronze Age, was a special treat. To this day, swords made with Toledo steel are world renowned. Swords from movies like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, and other Hollywood movies were Dr. John Finley and a bought there. According to Nicholas Mussatti, apart from going to flamenco dances or walking through a king’s old backyard, the best part was walking the streets without understanding a word anyone was saying. citizen of Gibraltar. Along with gaining a sense of Spanish culture, we visited many, businesses including one of the best banks in the world, the Santander bank. Other places visited included the most popular television channel in Madrid, Antena 3, and the Madrid International airport, where we were given a behind the scenes tour. Everyone learned a lot about Spain’s culture and how businesses work across the pond. Not only was the trip educational, it was so much fun as well. What did students have to do to get to Spain? Some sat out in about 30 degree weather as early as three in the morning on the steps of the Center for International Education for a $1000 grant. The grant is given out on a first come first serve basis depending on the time period that you want to study abroad and if the deposit fee was paid for said program. There are also many merit based scholarships all students can apply for. It requires a written essay along with recommendations. The Center for International Education helps you figure out ways to be able to afford to study. Students who studied abroad definitely recommend everyone to study abroad at least once in their college career. It will change your life for the better. Please pay a visit to the CIE house for more information on your search to find which country best suits you.
To TV or Not To TV? Is the Internet a rising competitor to TV Shows?
As technology progresses, many forms of entertainment become obsolete. Everyone, or at least a certain number of us, can remember the cassette tapes. Let’s not forget the entire Disney movie collection on VHS. Then came DVD’s, Blu Ray players and TiVo to knock the previous inventions that we thought were amazing out of the park. Well, the same thing is happening again, but this time the battle is between cable television and… the Internet? As farfetched as this may have seemed when you were still using “tape cleaners”, it’s true. The Internet is beginning to give cable a run for its money. Outlets like You Tube, Hulu and Netflix have all started their own original shows. Netflix just introduced a new season of Orange Is the New Black, a show that follows a woman sentenced to 15 months in prison. The show has become popular among and has a score of 8.7 on the IMDB website. Hulu just debuted The Awesomes, an animated show, and Quick Draw, a western comedy. YouTube has a host of original TV shows, such as Blue which stars Julia Stiles (Save the Last Dance), and there are romantic comedy shows such as RoomieLoverFriends, a popular show about roommates who blur the lines between living together and falling in love. If these outlets were not becoming competition when they started their own shows, they definitely are now that you can watch TV shows on your computer. Hulu is a website that lets you catch up on shows you may have missed (DVR who?), Netflix lets you watch entire seasons of shows without commercials, we all know how everyone hates commercials. On YouTube, you can go back and watch movies, older movies for free and the newer movies for a small fee. When asked, students of CSU said that they preferred watching shows (whether original or catching up) online because there was less hassle, no commercials, and they could watch everything on their own time. Being in college is a hassle; the last thing you would want is always having to miss your show because you may have a

7:30 class. “TV has a set timing of shows,” said Anna, a CSU student, “After the show goes off, if you don’t have satellite then good luck on trying to time when you are going to be able to watch the repeat.” “Hulu is great for catching up on TV shows!” Said Laura, Senior at CSU “Netflix has good shows! Like Orange is The New Black,” said Kay Alexander. The Internet can be less complicated to watch, but there is a downside to using it. You must have high speed, unlimited Internet in order to watch these shows without signal interruptions. Watching shows on Hulu means that you are behind the actual premiere date of the show, which could lead to hearing spoilers from your friends. All in all, it’s up to what your preference is when it comes to new shows. Whether sitting in front of the television or computer, you still will be entertained. Put those VCR’s away and go check out some original shows.
