to putt without replacing it when Doyle reminded him to put
it back. Had he not, and had Belcastro putted from the incorrect
position, he would have forfeited the hole and the match would
have been even.“That was really great of him,” said Belcastro.
Doyle said it was automatic. “If I had not done the right thing
and had gone on to win, it wouldn’t have felt like a win,” he said.
Doyle suffers from Legg-Calves-Perthes disease, which
has left him with a malformed and wrongly positioned femur in
his left hip. Some shots can cause further damage. “The tendon
gets caught between the bones. It’s painful,” says father, Mike. So
Doyle “walks out” of shots, ala Gary Player, to prevent that.

Great River’s lanky Ben James, also 15, birdied the final three
holes to shoot 67 and take medalist in the stroke-play qualifier,
making five birdies in the final seven holes. He overtook cheer-
ful 15-year-old Jack Bosworth, who at 5’5” and 97 pounds had
just made 6 birdies, a couple of them “bombs,” to join a group
of five who broke par. More important, Jack beat older brother
James, who usually thumps him, by ten shots. “The putts were rolling,” said Bosworth, sound-
ing like a veteran. “I probably had 29 putts.”
Belcastro shot even par in the qualifier, but faced challenges early in match play. Two
