I
t’s not often that there is a solid expectation
of who the winner will be before the first ball
is struck. Such was the case in the final days
of May, however, at Greenwich CC where a strong
field of professional and amateur players gathered
for the eighth annual Connecticut Women’s Open.
There were no surprises either as Liz Janangelo,
the state’s most dominant women’s amateur
in a generation, won her fourth straight Open
championship in her professional debut.
It was a perfect coming-out party for
Janangelo’s pro career. Instead of playing in the
week’s Future’s Tour event, she chose to honor the
CSGA by defending the crown she won last year at
Wampanoag, her home club. After firing back-toback rounds of 2-under 70 for a 4-stroke victory, she
further honored the CSGA by donating 10 percent
of her $5,000 paycheck from tournament sponsor
Schick to the association’s charities - The First Tee
of Connecticut and the Widdy Neale Scholarship
Fund.
“There’s no better thing than to make my pro
debut with the CSGA,” said Janangelo. “The people
here have been just been terrific to me since I was
13.”
