F
or the first time in the history of the
tournament, Manchester Country Club
will host the Connecticut Public Links
Championship on Monday & Tuesday,
September 30th & October 1st, 2013.
Originally founded in 1917,
Manchester Country Club was designed
by Devereux Emmet and Tom Bendelow,
two of the most famous designers from
the early 20th century. The course was
subsequently re-designed in 1935 by
A.W. Tillinghast, known for designing
some of the country’s most historic
venues such as Winged Foot Golf Club,
Baltusrol Golf Club and Bethpage State
Park. The course is a prime example of
“Old New England Golf”, which utilizes
the natural character of the land with
rolling fairways and small, well-protected
contoured greens.
Manchester Country Club
has previously hosted four CSGA
major championships, which include
three Connecticut Senior Amateur
Championships (1981, 1983 and 2008)
and one Connecticut Junior Amateur
Championship (1948). The most recent
championship, the 2008 Connecticut
Senior Amateur, was highlighted by
Rev. William T. Lee of the Course at
Yale capturing his fourth CSGA title,
having previously won three Connecticut
Amateurs (1975, 1979, 1990).
The Connecticut Public Links
Championship honors the true spirit of
public golf and is open to Connecticut
amateur golfers who, since January
1st of the current year, have been
bona fide public-course players, and
who hold a USGA Handicap Index not
exceeding 9.0. The tournament was first
played at Stanley Golf Course in New
Britain, Connecticut, with Del Kinney, Jr.
capturing the title.
