THE RAINY
SEASON
BIRDIE BARRAGE
Superintendent Scott Ramsay’s September 25th tweet said it all:
“6.35 inches of rain today at Yale.” Rain fell this summer in record
amounts, and when it wasn’t raining it was so hot and humid wet
fairways often burned to brown. Tournaments were postponed
and postponed again. “In my 20 years in the industry I’ve never
experienced a season with this amount of prolonged heat, humidity
and rain,” said Marc Weston, President of the Connecticut
Association of Golf Course Superintendents. “The summer of 2018
did a number on superintendents and their crews, emotionally and
physically. Regardless of what you do for a living, it is extremely
frustrating to put in tremendous time and effort, yet not feel the sense
of accomplishment we expect.” To which every Connecticut golfer’s
response should be: “Thank you. You did great.”
