The Credibility Crisis MAL64:25 | Page 7

heart, happiness becomes elusive. Recognizing and appreciating life’ s gifts fosters fulfillment. Too often, we let insatiable desires overshadow life’ s simple pleasures, diminishing our ability to find joy in everyday moments. By practicing gratitude, I hope to lower my threshold for happiness and rediscover the joy in life’ s little things.
Contentment is closely tied to gratitude. Contentment is hard to achieve because of society’ s pressures and expectations. There are some general standards and expectations that society requires us to conform to in order to be“ normal” or like others. To be content, I must respect who I am, what I have achieved, and the outcomes of my efforts. Comparing myself to others or desiring what they have only breeds dissatisfaction. True contentment comes from running your own race and evaluating yourself by your own standards. Happiness is a personal measure, and I am committed to assessing myself generously.
Worry is another obstacle to happiness. It stems from a lack of trust- in life, in God, and in the future. Trusting that the same forces that sustained me in the past will continue to do so helps me live with purpose and belief. Faith in a positive
future sets me free to pursue happiness without unnecessary anxiety. What sets you free is believing that the future will be bright, but even if it is not, worrying today won’ t change anything.
I have also come to accept that life is seasonal. There will always be good, favorable times and tough times. Happiness does not mean constant euphoria. Good seasons bring joy and gratitude, while bad seasons teach patience and resilience. Preparing for and adapting to life’ s changing seasons helps reduce stress and maintain perspective. The thinking and feeling during a bad season should never make us lose focus, meaning, and the joy we can get in the fullness of our lives.
Decluttering is another step toward happiness. Overcrowded lives- mentally, emotionally, or physically- create stress and conflict. By simplifying my mind, soul, and space, I can find peace and fulfillment. It is also important to avoid trying to fit into others’ spaces or following their paths without knowing their destinations. We need to learn how to create our own paths and walk them; to create your own space and live in it.
Once, a billionaire told me he avoided thinking about death, living as though it would not happen. While this mindset may inspire boundlessness, it is also a fallacy. Acknowledging life’ s impermanence brings humility and focus. It reminds us to cherish every moment and recognize that while life is precious, it is also fleeting. When you are enjoying something nice, there is a deeper appreciation and utility you derive from it by knowing that it will surely get finished.
This year, I am striving for higher, softer goals. I want to align with myself and my surroundings, reduce my threshold for happiness, and savor life’ s small pleasures. By focusing outward, embracing gratitude, and trusting the journey, I aim to free myself from unnecessary burdens. Like the leaf on the river, I want to ride the current, go with the flow, and trust that God has my back.
