Limitless: Identifying And Overcoming Containing Mindsets!
By Dr. Wale Akinyemi
Who is setting the boundaries of your growth? No one will ever grow or advance beyond the permission given to them by their mindsets. Now, if the mindset is so powerful, we should be asking ourselves: What exactly is this thing called mindset?
When I was a kid, anytime I was in the car with my mother and saw a really nicelooking car, I would stare at it. As sure as the sun rises every morning, I would hear my mother remind me that not all that glitters is gold and that we didn’ t know what they did to get the money. I heard this long enough that I began to fear getting rich because I did not want anyone to think I was a thief or a corrupt person.
Fast forward many years later, a client was going through some distress and reached out to me. They wanted me to buy their corporate jet. They had packaged a deal where I could get it for literally any amount. They just needed to show that it had been bought and was no longer theirs. They explained how I could use it for commercial purposes and that it would generate enough to pay the crew and cover what was owed on the plane. It was a nice and sweet deal.
The unintended consequence of hearing my mother say,“ We don’ t know how people get rich,” was that even though great opportunities were presented to me, including the opportunity to own a private jet many years ago; I turned it down.
Did I want the plane? Yes. Did I need the plane? Absolutely. So why did I turn down a legitimate offer to own a plane in one of the greatest deals of my life? My mindset
Your mindset determines which opportunities you see and seize. The voice of your past must not be louder than the voice of today’ s opportunity. Do not let your mind be a prisoner of your past. Release it into your future.
did not give me the permission.
Many people have been so battered by scarcity and have gotten so used to not having enough that they cannot handle abundance. They constantly try to shrink themselves and their expectations. Any ability to dream big in them has been totally shattered by the experiences that they have gone through in their lives. Their experience of life has contained their expectations from life.
The mindset is the conditioning of the mind through experience, exposure, and environment.
I grew up going to the Anglican church, and I loved that part of my childhood. I love hymns, and nothing for me beats going to the cathedral and hearing the hymns and the pipe organ. It was heavenly. Today, I know many hymns and can sing them without referring to any hymn book. Did I consciously dedicate time to learn them? No. But because of my consistent exposure to them, even though I was not taught, I was learning.
This is how the mindset operates. Our minds are conditioned to believe in a certain way and to learn certain things. Even though we were not directly taught, we learn through exposure.
