Removal Of Fact-Checkers, Opportunity For Traditional Media’ s Resurgence

By Diana Obath
In today’ s world, social media dominates how we consume news and interact with the world. However, the recent removal of fact-checking mechanisms from platforms like Facebook and Instagram has raised serious concerns. These platforms play a leading role in spreading information, but they are also responsible for spreading misinformation.
The removal of independent fact-checkers could have far-reaching consequences for both the reliability of online information and the future of traditional media. While this may be viewed as a win for free speech, it will only make the problem of misinformation worse. Replacing fact-checkers with community-driven verification systems, such as Meta’ s " Community Notes," gives users more responsibility in verifying claims, but it also changes the entire information landscape.
As misinformation continues to grow, traditional media which has always been built on accuracy and verification may have a unique opportunity to regain its position as a trusted source of news. However, for this to happen, traditional outlets must grasp the opportunity and evolve with the digital age while holding on to the standards that earned them trust in the first place.
The Rise of Social Media as a Primary News Source
Over the past two decades, social media has become a primary source of information. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X( Twitter) allow for instant updates and have become a go-to for breaking news, political updates, and even live streaming of events. Established media companies often turn to social media for immediate updates on news events. This shift has brought many benefits. Social

media spreads information quickly, and it also gives a voice to ordinary people through community journalism.
These benefits come with a significant downside: misinformation. The massive amount of content generated by users has made it harder to separate fact from fiction. A 2018 MIT study showed that false information spreads six times faster than true stories on X, and its sensational nature often makes it more viral.
The Role of Fact-Checkers in Social Media
To address the issue of misinformation, social media platforms initially brought in fact-checkers. These are independent organizations responsible for verifying information and flagging false claims. Fact-checkers help to identify viral hoaxes, conspiracies, and misleading content, providing users with trustworthy information. These fact-checking organizations, like PolitiFact and FactCheck. org, have always been key players in ensuring the accuracy of the information the public receives. Major platforms have partnered with these groups to label false content and reduce the reach of misleading posts.
However, this approach has not been perfect. Fact-checkers cannot keep up with the sheer volume of posts and the complexity of online misinformation. Social media companies have faced pressure to reduce their reliance on thirdparty fact-checkers, as users continue to argue that their content is unfairly censored or labeled as false. This has promoted social platforms to turn back to more community-driven verification systems.
