A word from the editor Welcome . . . W The County GOLF MAGAZINE countyzonegolfmag.co.uk ith Rory McIlroy returning to the “winner’s enclosure” at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and Colin Montgomerie finally breaking his United States tournament “duck” with victory in the US Senior PGA Championship, the golfing season definitely moved up a gear or two in May. And it’s also a time of change for this publication as we adjust to our new identity as the “County Zone” magazine covering Kent, Surrey and, Sussex. As the editor of the Kent section I am keen to build up a strong rapport with club secretaries and press officers across the county so that we can keep our readers fully up to date with what’s happening, golfing-wise, in Kent and I know the same applies to my two colleagues, Pete Simm and Derek Clements, the respective editors of the Surrey and Sussex sections. It won’t always be “good news” of course, and many clubs in the south-east suffered severe flooding problems during the winter, but what is good news is that they may be eligible to receive financial support through a new government initiative (see full story on page 5). Clubs that have been flooded, and also those in affected areas who have suffered a significant loss of green fees due to the disruption, can apply for support and are urged to do so as they strive to get back on their feet. Someone else offering a “helping hand” is London amateur Roger Southam, who hopes to raise £50,000 for the Sparks children’s charity by completing 18 holes in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in less than 24 hours on June 17. Roger, the chief executive and chairman of property management firm Chainbow, is to complete the ‘Sparks Golf Challenge,’ sponsored by Royal & Awesome, in spectacular fashion by flying 1200 miles by helicopter, and we wish him all the very best as he undertakes what promises to be a gruelling assignment for the most worthy of causes.
