Chris gains
advantage
with Virgin win
Chris Gane
(Lefthandedgolf@
Silvermere) held his
nerve in a play-off to
claim the 2014 Virgin
Atlantic PGA Southern
Open Championship
in spectacular style at
the Drift Golf Club.
Gane shot two 67s
on the final day for a
thirteen-under-par
total of 206, and then
splashed out to 18
inches to make a
terrific birdie on the
play-off hole and
claim victory from
fellow southern
stars David Callaway
(Foxhills) and Benn
Barham (PGolf
Coaching@Pedham).
His stellar
performance earned
him £2,500, one of the
biggest pay cheques
of the season, while
Barham and Callaway
took home £1,375
each.
Gane had only just
qualified, shooting
two birdies at the 16th
and 17th to make the
cut with a 72.

Corben leads Hindhead
to County Club title
H
INDHEAD’S team
of David Corben,
Kieran Lovelock
and Cameron Phillips
are the new Surrey club
champions after emerging
triumphant at the
County Championships,
which was played this at
Kingswood and Surrey
Downs Golf Clubs this
year.
It was only the second time
in the championship’s 90year history that Hindhead
has been victorious, the
previous occasion being in
1993.
The trio will now move
forward to represent
Surrey in the English
Club Championship to
be held at Trentham Golf
Club, Staffordshire, from
September 20-21.
Corben shot a fantastic
seven under par to be top
qualifier of the 16 golfers
who competed in the
knock-out stages of the
individual County Amateur
Championship which was
played at Kingswood over
the following two days.
David successfully made
his way to the final, where
he was narrowly defeated
on the last hole, by fellow
County team-mate Oscar
Granström-Livesey from
Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club
in Richmond.
Corben, who is Surrey’s first
team captain, and Lovelock
have been members of
Hindhead Golf Club since
they were both juniors.
