SPRING INTO SUMMER
BRIGHT MORNINGS AND LONG SUNNY DAYS
filled with all that The County has to offer visitors.
As spring unfurls, The County erupts in a million marvelous shades of green;
then, when summer takes hold, visitors will experience the region is at its best.
Bring your kayak or canoe (or rent from a local outfitter) and paddle along the
serene and scenic Aroostook River to take in the best of the region (page 12).
The river’s slow, smooth bends make for a delightful days outing. Those
looking for the adventure of a lifetime will find it along the wild and scenic
Allagash River that cuts deep through the North Maine Woods. It is the
kind of expedition that requires a Registered Maine Guide at your side to
take care of all the details (page 35).
The County offers hikers many delightful ways to escape from the world. From
a quick 2.5-mile morning hike, an extensive trail survey of Aroostook State
Park (page 28), or a multi-day backwoods adventure, this is the place to set
a new pace. Spring and summer offer a foragers menu of fiddleheads, ramps,
and more. The region’s rail trails and long winding roads are nearly-endless
opportunities for biking (page 8).
Did we mention fishing? Springtime f ly-fishing (page 16) for elusive and rare
Arctic char way up north rolls into summer casting for salmon, togue (lake
trout), and brookies in the plentiful lakes, rivers, and streams including prized
freshwater sport fishing destinations like the Fish River Chain of Lakes and
the St. John River.
Warm days and cool nights are perfect for a backpack camping experience
(page 14), whether it be out to Deboullie in the North Woods (page 28) or
down along the International Appalachian Trail that cuts through the region
from Katahdin north along the Canadian border. Those with more domestic
camping needs will be relieved to find RV campgrounds and cabin rentals
aplenty (page 52) from Houlton up to Fort Fairfield and over to Eagle Lake.
But it isn’t just about rugged outdoor adventure in The County. Swing the
clubs at one of our breathtaking, world-class golf courses (page 38). Enjoy a
day of shopping (page 40) or dining out with friends (page 56). Be sure to head
to our Signature Events (page 18) like Midsommar in New Sweden marking
the summer solstice or up to Madawaska for Tintamarre in August and see
how the Acadians whoop it up!
