WELCOME TO THE COUNTY
Aroostook County is far too big a place to be covered entirely in one guide.
So many places to go and see. So many great ways to get out and explore.
And four seasons to do it all in. But each year we pull together what we
think are the best ways for you to enjoy The County. Read on to learn more
about places to discover, off-the-beaten-path experiences, and stories about
our people and their communities.
MARKING 200 TRIUMPHANT YEARS IN MAINE
Long before Maine became a state in 1820, the first people called what became
Maine and Aroostook County home. In the 1780s, the Québecois and French
Canadians built settlements along the St. John’s River setting the tone for
250 years of ongoing migration into Aroostook County by a multitude of
ethnic and religious backgrounds. Each with hardships to surmount and all
with the courage to plant roots, stick it out and build communities. Despite
the challenges, these communities have grown along with Maine. Each year
thousands return to those roots in The County to celebrate that heritage.
