ALL THE EXPERIENCE, NONE OF THE GUESSWORK
Maine Guides are recognized worldwide as the gold standard in outdoor skills
and knowledge ever since the first Maine Guide license was issued in 1897.
Today, more than 6,000 guides in six specialized classifications are certified by
the State of Maine and by the American Red Cross in first aid. Trained to assist
in any field, forest, water, or ice activity, a Maine Guide will ensure that you
know where to go and are prepared with the correct equipment. Environmental
stewards as well as educators, many guides incorporate a message of land steward-
ship while teaching guests how to enjoy the sports of hunting and fishing.
Many Aroostook County outfitters are also Maine Guides or can easily put you
in touch with one. Outfitters provide equipment, advice, and the resources you
need to set up your own trip, or you can take part in individualized or group
tours. Whether you want to find rare plants, explore remote destinations, enjoy a
hunting trip, sleep at a primitive campsite, learn a new skill, fish, dog sled,
canoe, or ski, a Registered Maine Guide can turn your dream into reality.
HUNTING IN THE COUNTY
With its proximity to the Maine Woods, hunters annually head to the region
for a chance at moose, ten-point bucks, elusive black bear, waterfowl and
wild turkey, thanks to the abundant wildlife found among millions of acres
of forest and agricultural land. When hunting in Maine, you must possess the
proper license and be informed on our laws, guidelines, and the various seasons.
Blaze orange clothing is required when hunting during the firearms season
on deer, the muzzle-loading season on deer, or within an open moose hunting
district during moose hunting season.
CHOOSING A REGISTERED MAINE GUIDE OR OUTFITTER
– Take the time you need to get to know potential guides and determine if
they are a good fit before you choose one. Ask lots of questions about what is
included and the fees, as well as cancellation, refund policies, and references.
– Search for a guide who has certification in the services you are looking for.
Maine offers and extensively trains guides in five specialized registrations,
including Specialized Hunting, Fishing, and Recreation.
– Be realistic and have reasonable goals for your experience. Remember, things
like weather are not in a guide’s control.
