are passed from generation to generation. But it’s no secret that there
is great fishing throughout The County, all year long.
Aroostook County offers abundant ponds, deep cold lakes, and hundreds of
miles of free-f lowing fresh water. Rare goodies to be found in these waters,
making fishing here a favorite recreational activity all year round, from
casting for lake trout on our larger rivers to our enviable native brook
trout population.
THE COUNTY | 2019-2020
It helps if you’re an experienced angler to read the water and take on the
challenge offered by our trout and salmon fishery. But even novices can have
fun fishing from the boat or even from the dock at camp. New anglers will not
be disappointed, as the waters here are teem with any number of trophy species,
including both wild or native brook trout, smallmouth bass, and salmon.
Those looking for brook trout should consider exploring the Fish River area
for an unbeatable experience. With many camps and rentals, this historically
rich fishery lives up to its name. Nearby, Carr Pond and St. Froid Lake in
Winterville offer the challenge of landlocked salmon and togue (aka lake trout).
Maine’s Department of Inland Fish & Wildlife provides reliable tips on
where to head for these sporting species. Long Lake, part of the Fish River
Chain of Lakes, is famous for traditional cold-water species. Snow and ice
come early and stay late, making the area an ideal ice-fishing destination.
Numerous snowmobile trails afford excellent access to the lakes.
Except for the two annual Free Fishing Weekends (one in winter and one in
early summer), anglers over the age of 16 must possess the proper Maine license.

Warm-water anglers will find smallmouth bass plentiful in East Grand Lake,
Mattawamkeag Lake, Pleasant Pond, and several other lakes in southern
and central Aroostook. One of the biggest prizes of all in Maine for anglers
is Arctic char. This beautiful species of fish with its speckled body and red-
colored belly can only be caught in some of the most northern waters in the
United States. Deboullie Pond, deep in the North Maine Woods, offers just
such an opportunity.
