THE SEASONS
EACH OF THE COUNTY’S FOUR SEASONS
has pleasures and beauty distinctly its own. Offering so many
opportunities to enjoy the region, it might be hard to pick a favorite.
Winter is a wonderland in The County. You’ll find the best snow in the eastern
United States, averaging nearly 10 feet annually and perfect for snowmobiling,
snowshoeing, and skiing. Set up with a thermos on our frozen waters for great
ice-fishing. Don’t miss the festive Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Race,
held in Fort Kent every March. Keep an eye skyward at night for an unequaled
view of the Aurora Borealis.
With Spring, discover the gentle awakening of our woods and fields. As
the sun’s warmth thaws our waterways and melts deep snows, the sap starts
running, trees are budding, and wildlife emerges from its winter hideaway.
Look for maple festivities—wonderful gatherings of sweet delight. Lakes and
streams open up for fishing; in the woods, look for fiddleheads to gather.
Summer heats up with outdoor recreation galore. Explore our world-famous
wilderness areas; enjoy hiking, paddling, camping, fishing, and ATVing.
Take in miles of wide-open roads by car, motorcycle, or bike. View rolling
fields, beautiful mountains, and our unique model solar system. Communities
along the way offer unique shopping opportunities in historic districts and
cultural and historical sites. Festivities abound, ranging from potato celebrations
to hot-air balloons to fishing derbies. Bright green fairways await golfers, and
fields full of berries are ripe for pickers. Perhaps you’d prefer simply relaxing,
absorbing solitude and quiet in one of the world’s most pristine landscapes.
With our vast wooded places, leaf-peeping come Autumn couldn’t be better,
as leaves turn brilliant golds and reds. Communities love to hold agricultural
fairs, with livestock demonstrations, produce, midways, and entertainment.
Look for orchards where you can pick your own apples or get lost in a maze
of corn. Hire a Maine Guide or outfitter to show you the best hunting or
fishing spots for prey like our massive moose, ten-point bucks, or wild turkey;
return to your sporting camp for a roaring campfire under the stars.
