Fall planting and decorating time is coming soon

By Jen Jones
Fall is generally the time when people think about planting bulbs for spring bloom . What many people don ’ t realize is you can plant any perennial in the fall for beautiful gardens next year . Think beyond tulips , daffodils and other spring flowers to what you would like your garden to look like during the summer .
Debbie Gaumer and Kristy Leindecker , owners of The Garden Patch Greenhouse , shared advice for planting in the fall .
“ I encourage people to plant all year , not just in the spring ,” Gaumer said . “ If you are planting bulbs in the fall , be sure to wait until it cools off or your bulbs might sprout and won ’ t be as nice next spring .”
Leindecker said to wait until spring to fertilize your garden . Fertilizer will encourage growth . “ You want your plants to adapt to where they are planted , not grow a lot in

the fall ,” she said .
She also encourages year-round planting and said to make sure to water plants enough in the summer . “ Summer planting needs more care to keep them watered as much as they need ,” she said .
Both Gaumer and Leindecker plant trees at all times of the year , but they said you should not fertilize the trees . Fall is a good time to plant decorative grasses , asters and other perennials .
“ Flowering kale and flowering cabbage will bloom all the way through the fall ,” Gaumer said .

Straw bales , scarecrows , metal yard decorations , pumpkins and mums can all be used to create colorful displays outside your home .
She also said gardeners need to carefully research what type of bulb they are buying . “ There are many different types of the same plant . Some will come back every year and some won ’ t ,” she said .
Mums are one flower that seem to confuse people the most . Just because
a flower is called a hardy mum does not mean it will bloom every year . Do your research or ask at your local garden center which mums will return . Gaumer said people might be surprised to see all of the types of bulbs that can be planted in the fall , and research will help people choose the best
plants for their garden .
For beautiful fall displays , Leindecker and Gaumer offered several suggestions . Straw bales , scarecrows , metal yard decorations , pumpkins and mums can all be used to create colorful displays outside your home . The Garden Patch has about 30 colors of mums .
“ We grow most of them right here , and what we don ’ t grow , I get from a close neighbor . We buy everything we can locally ,” Gaumer said .
They will have perennial mums too , but those colors are limited .
While many people think about their gardens in the spring and buy plants , they can save a lot of money by buying the bulbs in the fall and planting when it is cooler outside . Another way to save money is to share perennials with friends and families . A small cutting is usually enough to grow the next spring .
