4-H clubs keep moving forward with fair plans
By Marianne Austin
The Coshocton County Fair is one of the ways 4-H club youth can show the skills they learned throughout the year . With the 2020 pandemic canceling everything last year , people are looking forward to a more traditional fair this year .
“ We want this to proceed as normal like we did in 2019 with no restrictions or extra guidelines . We would like to set up our booths and show our animals at the fair , and we are excited to get back to normal . We are watching for changes and keeping everyone safe , but we ’ re hoping for a normal fair this year ,” said Jenny Strickler , 4-H youth development educator at the extension office .
Analea Smith is the advisor for Active Achievers 4-H Club , which meets at Coshocton Christian Tabernacle .
“ This club has kids from Coshocton and Ridgewood , but anyone is welcome really ,” she said . “ We ’ re planning to have a full fair as far as we know . We ’ re decorating our booth like we normally do . Our theme this year is ‘ 4-H Is Moving Forward ,’ and we ’ ll be decorating accordingly to go with that theme . We will be decorating our main booth in the youth building , and we have a lot of livestock in our club that will be in the barn . The kids decorate above their pen so we know whose club they are a part of .
“ We have about 30 kids in our group . It ’ s a lot of work , and it usually takes about two days to decorate . The advisors take on the main booth , but the kids and parents who are in livestock decorate themselves and we supply the materials . We have one self-determined project in our booth , and the rest are livestock this year , which is very rare for us .”
Self-determined means the 4-H club member picks a topic of interest he / she wants to learn about .
“ This year she did her project on powders and protein and sold them , basically starting her own business ,” Smith said . “ We post a picture for each livestock project in the booth with informational things about their project . Usually , it is a photo of them with the livestock project they are taking . With special interest projects , they come up with their own display . In the past we ’ ve had cooking projects , You Are the Athlete projects , discovering 4-H
